At 67, I Stopped Disappearing Into the Same Beige Coat Every Winter

A LETTER FROM A READER

AT 67, I STOPPED DISAPPEARING INTO THE SAME BEIGE COAT EVERY WINTER

I have never written one of these before, and I nearly didn't, because it's only a coat. But four different women asked me about it at my sister's birthday lunch last week — my coat, of all things — and I've explained it enough times now that it seemed easier to write it down properly.

For years, the last thing I put on was always the thing that let me down. I'd have the outfit right, then reach for the same shapeless beige coat by the door and watch myself disappear into it. It kept me warm and it kept me invisible, and somewhere along the way I'd decided that was just what a coat was meant to do at my age.

"Warm, yes. But I'd catch sight of myself in a shop window and think — when did I start dressing like I'd stopped trying."

HOW IT HAPPENS

I don't think anyone decides to give up on looking nice. It happens the way most things happen after sixty — one practical choice at a time. A coat has to be warm, so you stop minding that it's shapeless. It has to go with everything, so you buy it in beige and forget about it. Eventually the only thing hanging by the door is sensible and a little sad, and you tell yourself that's simply what suits you now.

WHAT I HAD WRONG

I'd assumed elegant and comfortable couldn't live in the same coat at my age — that I had to pick one. The Gloria is the first thing I've hung by that door in years that doesn't ask me to choose.

THE COAT IS CALLED THE GLORIA

It's from Bennett Boston, an American label that's been quietly looking after women our age for a good twenty years. The Gloria is a classic vintage trench — knee-length, properly tailored, with lapels, a tie belt, and two discreet side pockets that my hands are grateful for. It's cut to skim rather than cling, which I hadn't realised was the thing I'd been missing all along.

It's lighter than my old coat but somehow does more. There's a real shape to it, so I don't feel like I'm hiding, and it's the sort of weight that works from a cool morning right through to an evening out. I have it in beige, and I've since caught myself thinking about the khaki.

WHAT HAPPENED AT MY SISTER'S LUNCH

I wore it to my sister's birthday lunch, and four different women asked where it was from — including my sister, who has not once complimented anything I've worn in fifty years. I had it on again the next morning to take my dog, Biscuit, round the block, and felt just as right in it. That, at 67, is the whole thing really — a coat you can wear somewhere special or out with the dog first thing, and feel like yourself in either way.

THREE THINGS I'VE LEARNED SINCE

A shape is not the same as a fuss. It's a proper tailored coat, but it goes on as easily as the old one did. Nobody would guess I gave it a second thought.

A real colour changes how you feel. After ten years of beige and navy, even standing a little straighter felt like a small rebellion. And they do it in pink and black too, if you're braver than me.

The right coat gets you out the door. I reach for it now instead of dreading it, which means I actually go — errands, church, a walk — rather than talking myself out of it.

ABOUT THE PRICE

I'll be honest about why I'm writing this rather than just telling my sister where I got it. The Gloria is currently $59.95, down from $120 — half off for their summer sale — and when I looked again this week the middle sizes were already going. They do it from a US 2–4 right up to a US 24–26, the same cut the whole way through, which I wish more places would bother with, in beige, pink, khaki and black.
