At 67, I Stopped Dreading the Words "Summer Dress Code"
A LETTER FROM A READER
AT 67, I STOPPED DREADING THE WORDS "SUMMER DRESS CODE"
I have never written one of these before, and I almost talked myself out of it, because it's only a dress. But three women stopped me at my niece's garden party to ask about it — one of them followed me to the drinks table — and I've explained where it's from enough times now that it felt easier to just write it down.
For years, a warm-weather invitation landed on the mat and my heart sank a little. Summer dresses seemed to come in two kinds: sleeveless and far too short, which meant arms and knees I'd rather not put on show, or a great shapeless tent of a thing that covered me up and aged me by a decade. So I'd wear the same dark shift I always wore, sit in the shade, and quietly wait for it to be autumn again.
"I wasn't underdressed and I wasn't uncomfortable. I just always looked like the woman who'd given up trying — in every photograph, there I was in navy, at the edge."

HOW IT HAPPENS
I don't think anyone decides to stop feeling pretty in summer. It creeps up on you one careful choice at a time. You cover your arms, so you give up on sleeveless. You don't want anything clinging, so you buy things a size too big. And before long the only warm-weather dress in the wardrobe is dark, safe and a little sad, and you've told yourself that's simply what's sensible now.
WHAT I HAD WRONG
I'd decided that "covered up" and "feminine" couldn't live in the same dress at my age — that I had to pick one. The Florence is the first thing I've pulled off the hanger in years that doesn't ask me to choose.
THE DRESS IS CALLED THE FLORENCE
It's from Bennett Boston, an American label that's been quietly looking after women our age for a good twenty years. The Florence is a floral maxi — full length, so my knees are none of anyone's business, with soft flutter sleeves that cover the tops of the arms without a bit of fuss. It's cut to flow and skim rather than cling, in a lightweight, breathable fabric that behaves itself in the heat.
The print is what won me over — a deep navy scattered with pink, lilac and cornflower blooms, which sounds a lot but wears as elegant. It's the sort of dress that moves when you do. Nobody would call it matronly, and nobody would mistake me for trying to be twenty-five either. It simply looks like me, on a good day.

WHAT HAPPENED AT THE GARDEN PARTY
I wore it to my niece's party and, for once, I wasn't the woman in the corner in navy — I was the one being asked where the dress was from. Even my sister, who has not willingly complimented a thing I've worn in fifty years, said the colour suited me. The next morning I had it on again to take my dog, Biscuit, round the block, and felt just as easy in it. That, at 67, is really the whole thing — a dress you can wear somewhere special or out with the dog, and feel like yourself either way.
THREE THINGS I'VE LEARNED SINCE
Length is a kindness. A proper maxi means I stop thinking about my knees the moment I put it on, and I can sit, bend and chase after Biscuit without a single adjustment.
A little print changes everything. After years of dark and plain, a bit of colour made me stand a touch straighter. I hadn't realised how much the beige and navy had been doing to me.

The right dress gets you out the door. I say yes to things now — lunches, church, the odd party — instead of finding a reason to stay home. It turns out I wasn't tired of going out. I was tired of what I had to wear.
ABOUT THE PRICE
I'll be honest about why I'm writing this rather than just telling my sister where I found it. The Florence is currently $49.95, down from $100 — half off for their summer sale — and when I checked again this week the middle sizes were already going. They cut it from a US 4–6 right up to a US 30–32, the very same dress the whole way through, which I wish more places would trouble themselves to do.

I haven't reached for the sad dark shift once since it arrived.
